World Mental Health Day 2008

World Mental Health Day takes place each year on 10 October and can be a great way of raising awareness of mental health issues and combating the stigma and silence that surrounds mental illness.

We are listing details of various regional 'WMHD' events here

An important initiative we would encourage you to get involved in is...

Get Moving Week 2008

Get Moving - 4 to 12 October - is one part of a ground-breaking programme of national and local activity called Time to Change which is being led by a partnership of four mental health organisations – Mental Health Media, Rethink, Mind and the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College.

The programme, funded by the Big Lottery and Comic Relief, will reduce the stigma and discrimination linked to mental health. Moving People will create a measurable positive shift in public attitudes and a genuine reduction in discrimination with all of the work being evaluated by the Institute of Psychiatry.

Mind is coordinating the Get Moving project as part of Time to Change, which is a week-long mass participation event where a national focus will be put on mental well-being and the benefits of physical activity. Get Moving is designed to reach out beyond the world of mental health and capture the attention and imagination of hundreds of thousands of people through links with, for example, the Eden Project, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, the Ramblers Association and Natural England.

This is the first year of a four-year project that aims to bring people with direct experience of mental health problems together with other members of local communities to build awareness, challenge attitudes and tackle discrimination.
