This focus area supports the continued development of early intervention in psychosis services across the West Midlands. Early intervention in psychosis services are being developed to support individuals between 14 and 35 years with a first episode psychosis.
The scope of early intervention services is to engage young people and their families earlier in the care pathway into mental health services by education and close links with primary care and community services (who are the usual referring agents into mental health services) as well as offering a service which is youth focussed and has a low stigma to young people.
Once engaged in the service, the young person and family are offered support, education and treatment within an assertive outreach approach for up to the first three years of the psychosis.
The work relates to supporting the NHS plan with a commitment to develop 50 EI services Nationally. The work supports teams to develop their services with guidance from the Policy Implementation Guide, IRIS Guidelines and Early psychosis Declaration.
Ultimate outcome:
The ultimate outcome for the project this year is to help teams develop their early detection role to enable them to reach people earlier by improving the pathway into services as well as supporting individuals who have an early emerging psychosis.
