Welcome to Offender Health and Social Care
Meet the Team:
The Offender Health and Social Care programme is funded by the Department of Health and supports regional improvements in the health outcomes for offenders. This includes working with health and social care professionals, police, courts, prison and probation services, and community and voluntary organisations.
At a regional level, the programme manages the mental and physical health pathway of the regional reducing re-offending action plan. The programme also supports regional networks for prison health commissioners, professionals involved in working with offenders with secondary mental health needs and prison healthcare managers. At an operational level CSIP supports organisations to improve outcomes through specific projects.
In 2007/8 the programme’s key aims include:
- Improving commissioner capability through greater sharing of information
- Implementation of NICE anxiety and depression guidelines in prison
- Pilot programme to support carers of offenders with mental health needs
- Report and action plans on access to primary care for offenders and harm reduction measures in selected prisons
- Review of BME access to secondary mental health services in prison and region wide action plan
- Broaden support for community based offender physical health and well being projects
Criminal Justice workforce support to improve understanding of mental health - Produce good practice document of adult social care in prisons
- Develop a primary mental health toolkit for professionals working with offenders in the community
