Dr David Shiers
David Shiers is GP advisor to CSIP West Midlands and jointly leads with Dr Jo Smith the NIMHE National Early Intervention Programme.
Mental illness was no more than a professional interest as a GP (25 years) in Leek until David's daughter developed schizophrenia aged 16 (1993).
David co-founded with other close colleagues a West Midlands initiative called IRIS (Initiative to Reduce the Impact of Schizophrenia) to improve services for young people with psychosis and their families. Through IRIS, David and Jo led the development of the Early Psychosis Declaration (WHO 2004) and been heavily involved in policy development and implementation.
David has a national reputation for his work on mental health in primary care particularly using patient narrative to improve understanding of complex care systems. This has been delivered in the West Midlands through CSIPs well established Mindset programme targeted at local multidisciplinary groups.
