David Clarke has been awarded the contract to lead the work of the Regional Employment Team (R.E.T.). David started at the beginning of September and the contract ends on 31st March, 2008.

RETs are to be established in each of the CSIP regions and their key task is to ensure co-ordinated activity between Partner Organisations (which will form the membership of the RET) and across the labour market. This initiative is part of the ‘Employment’ Work Programme that is led by Mary Dunleavy.

Early objectives for the RET are to hold a ‘summit meeting’ of the Partner Organisations to agree a Regional Employment Strategy, and consequently to produce an action plan which will have a range of outcome measures.

David’s role will include leading and supporting the Team in such activities and in preparing for this he commented:

‘…Enabling people who live with a mental illness to have a real chance to secure, or return to, a real job must become a routine part of their care, its planning and management. It needs to be understood by all that interventions and actions should contribute toward the goal of making employment a realistic outcome…’

Until Autumn last year David was the Programme Advisor for Mental Health working for one of the former Strategic Health Authorities. He has worked independently since 2000 advising professional bodies, private sector businesses, and NHS Organisations on a range of management and policy issues; he is a trustee of PRIMHE (Primary Care Mental Health and Education),and Chairman of a registered charity working to relieve poverty and hardship in South India.
